Welcome to the campfire. Just like walking up to a campfire at a local crag or beach you never know what kind of conversation you'll intercept here. We may be talking about prosthetic feet or it may be the latest health-care bill pending before congress. You may find a thread about which camera is the best to take on your sea-kayaking trip or one asking how to get in touch with Erik Weihenmayer. You just don't know what you'll find here. Use the search function to look up prior threads or just browse.

All we ask is that you be respectful and honor the sanctity of the campfire.

Thx,
Malcolm

I am a new user of this site, a Polish citizen living in the UK (England).
After having a paragliding accident in 2005 I am about to lose my battle to safe my left leg and I am looking for hospitals in USA or Canada or any country in the world to performe the rotationplasty on my leg.
If I supposed to lose the leg I would simply prefer to chose the best (in my opinion) solution.
I am looking for people, who had had this done to get ready for the enevitable.

Beautiful Rebels: Paradox Sports
By Morgan Stanfield
Paradox Sports is a nascent adaptive sports organization that rose out of the world of rock climbing, a dangerous, solitary sport performed in some of the most harrowing and beautiful territory on earth. Climbing attracts and breeds singular personalities—rebellious iconoclasts with a hunger for the new. Because climbers describe their discovery of pathways up sheer rock faces as "solving problems," it's fitting that the organization was created when a severely injured veteran joined forces with an eccentric pro climber to get a paralyzed comrade up a rock face under his own power. The solution to the problem spawned an organization with a celebratory spirit, a philosophy of radical self-acceptance, and the beginnings of a community unique in the world of adaptive sports...
Mountain Biking

I have a mountain biking question. I am a RBK and have had difficulty riding my mountain bike since my amputation. I had a hard time turning the peddle on the upstroke. Fortunately, we are working on a leg that is strictly for biking. I am really excited and am the "test socket" stage. I spent a lot of time on a stationary bike in the prosthetists office yesterday working with placement of my foot on the peddle and socket comfort. Everything is working out well but we have yet to choose a foot setup for the prosthetic. We discussed some custom one off solutions and kicked around a basic carbon fiber foot. I was interested in finding out if anyone has had experience with this. I really loved riding my bike before loosing my leg and would love to be able to ride it again. I want to make sure this prosthetic is right and we have the right components. Any advice would be helpful. Thanks in advance.

This thing makes the i-LIMB look like it's made out of Tinker Toys. No offense to Touch Bionics, of course. Its interface, which hasn't been described in the press yet, is also cool--the more pressure you leverage with the arm, the tighter it holds to your body to contain the weight. Then, it opens up again when you set down your load. I just wrote a news item about this for The O&P EDGE, and Academy Today, which we're bundling with the EDGE this month, has an unfortunately dense scholarly article about the interface. The news story should go online Monday, the article comes out in the mag in June.
