Excellence There are a number of common threads that run through our interpretation of a life of excellence. First is the Zen concept that the journey is the destination. Excellence is not something that you can acquire or own, but rather it is a characteristic to strive for; it's real value is hidden in the everyday actions you take in its pursuit. Second, a life of excellence is surrounded by a community rich in support, challenge and commitment to the sustenance of the community. This community will always be available to cheer you on as you pursue your path. And finally, a life of excellence is characterized by a high level of acceptance of who you are; a self-confidence evidenced by willingness to try new things, meet new people and embrace the consequences. Human Powered Outdoor Sports Paradox Sports is the product of a group of people who have a burning desire to engage the world in the pursuit of excellence. When a paraplegic scaled the 3,000-foot walls of El Capitan and a blind man climbed to the top of Mount Everest, we were all forced to recalibrate our perception of the possible. In the process of reexamination we discovered that what we consider normal -- climbing, surfing, mountain biking, backcountry skiing and kayaking -- was actually thought of by many as risky, daredevil behavior, and an impossible activity for the "disabled". We respectfully disagree. These are the sports that define us and get us out of bed in the morning. Community We are proud of the communities that have spontaneously sprung up around our people and our events. Human-powered outdoor sports are individual efforts; it's our vision, personal choices and self-determination that drive us to the summit or to the finish line. Yet, paradoxically, these same sports give rise to an astonishing community, rich with activity, commitment and friendship, all tied together by our shared quest for a life of excellence. Our gatherings are characterized by a assortment of gimps, normals and world-class athletes working together in the pursuit of excellence. The results are non-discriminatory. We have a positive effect on participant's lives, regardless of physical ability or the number of functioning limbs. Authenticity Our authenticity has its roots in the diverse nature of the Paradox Sports tribe. You won't find too many wallflowers in our group, but you will find wounded vets, climbers who lost limbs, people with congenital amputations and paraplegics. Right alongside of them, you'll bump into world-class climbers, riders and cyclists with business owners, bookkeepers, musicians, inventors and university professors filling out the ranks. What is it that brings us all together? It's the desire to give back to a community that has given us so many great memories, lifelong friends and rich rewards. |
